4th of July in the Wild, Wild West

There is no doubt about it. The American spirit is contagious in the town of Steamboat Springs, CO. Their4th of July celebrations were as diverse as the American people. Something for everyone.

Yesterday, I started the day by volunteering my time cutting up strawberries for shortcake and icecream at the United Methodist Church in Steamboat. We were preparing for the block party hosted by the Tread of Pioneers Museum.  Then on to the parade that included cowboys on horses, the usual firetruck brigades, antique cars, and all kinds of silliness to lighten the spirit!  Then onto watch the amazing athletes ski jumping in training for the 2010 Olympics. Of course, you can’t have the 4th of July without a traditional fireworks display.

This was only a smattering of events going on in town – I never did make it to the Arts and Crafts Festival, the rollerski race down main street , to the evening rodeo or getting wet rafting and tubing down the Yampa River. Oh – well, the summer is still young.

I finished up the day eating the homemade strawberry-rhubarb pie I made at the pie making lessons  at Leslie’s house the day before.

Rest assured, the American spirit is alive and well

 in the American West!
